CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — A standoff between South Africa’s Women’s World Cup squad and the national soccer association over pay and other issues forced officials to field a makeshift team of little-known players that included a 13-year-old for a game against Botswana on Sunday. The game was supposed to be the final warm-up match for the African women’s champion on home soil before it headed off to the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, but it turned into an embarrassment on and off the field as the entire World Cup squad sat out the game.South Africa’s team of replacement players hastily pulled together from local clubs lost 5-0 to Botswana at the Tsakane Stadium near Johannesburg. They were 4-0 down at halftime in a game that was delayed for an hour at the request of the South African Football Association (SAFA) so it could scramble and put together a team.South Africa coach Desiree Ellis said one of the players she had to draft in wa...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Thousands of hotel workers in Southern California walked off the job on Sunday, demanding higher pay and better benefits in what the union is calling the largest strike in its history. Cooks, room attendants, dishwashers, servers, bellmen and front desk agents at hotels were picketing outside major hotels in Los Angeles and Orange counties just as the summer tourist is ramping up. Last month, members of Unite Here Local 11 voted 96% in favor of authorizing the strike. The union is seeking better wages, improved healthcare benefits, higher pension contributions and less strenuous workloads. In addition, the union wants to create a “hospitality workforce housing fund” to help workers deal with the soaring costs of living in greater Los Angeles. Many employees report commuting hours to work because they can’t afford to live near their jobs. “Our members were devastated first by the pandemic, and now by the greed of their bosses,” union co-president Kurt Petersen...

Rare blip by Twins reliever Jhoan Duran leads to series finale loss in Baltimore

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:23:16 GMT

BALTIMORE — One run, a fantastic start from their starting pitcher and scoreless innings from relievers Griffin Jax and Jhoan Duran was a winning recipe for the Twins on Saturday. The Twins tried to go back to that same recipe on Sunday, but this time, well, it didn’t quite work.Starter Sonny Gray was fantastic through six innings and Jax did his part, too, but the normally-reliable Duran faltered in the eighth inning, giving up a pair of runs as the Baltimore Orioles took the series finale 2-1.After striking out the first batter he faced in the eighth, Duran allowed a softly-hit single to Adley Rutschman. Anthony Santander followed by smoking a single to cap off a nine-pitch at-bat before Aaron Hicks brought home the Oroles’ first run of the day with a single to center.A nice stop by Alex Kirilloff at first base saved Duran — momentarily. But after falling behind 3-0 in the count to the next batter, Ryan O’Hearn, the Twins put him on base. Duran promptly hit Jordan Westburg with a ...

PEBBLE BEACH – In August 2004, Mina Harigae sat down for an interview with The Monterey Herald. Then 14 years old, the Monterey native – who’s now halfway through her 13th season on the LPGA Tour – reflected on her golfing career.“Next year I want to win the U.S. Junior,” she said, just ahead of starting her freshman year at Stevenson School in Pebble Beach. “That is my goal. And make the U.S. Women’s Amateur quarterfinals. (I) want to win at least one (American Junior Golf Association) event, or junior nationals. Later on I want to go pro. College? Maybe I’ll go one year or two.”It wasn’t an exact premonition, but her aspirations were hardly unrealistic.Harigae has been golfing professionally since 2009, making her one of the few players – male or female – to come off the Peninsula and make it at the pro level. Though the 33-year-old has never won on the LPGA Tour, she’s repeatedly fought her way into the mix with the sport’s top women, especially in the past three years.Enjoying a...
