A look at 49ers’ depth chart following offseason and heading into training camp

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:34:05 GMT

SANTA CLARA — Kyle Shanahan wants no part of depth charts, especially before training camp even begins. The 49ers concluded their offseason work Wednesday with their mandatory minicamp, and it went about as well as they could have hoped. Key veterans rarely saw the field and so no one was injured. Brock Purdy is making steady progress with his right elbow.Christian McCaffrey, who detests days off, got through it all unscathed. The OTA and mandatory minicamp sessions amounted to introductory seminars for new players and valuable review for returning players. The 49ers have the most stacked roster in the NFL, and keeping the mainstays upright is Job 1. Mission accomplished.“I don’t try to come in and know who’s ahead or not,” Shanahan said. “All this stuff gives these guys a chance to have a chance to compete in training camp.”If Shanahan won’t oblige, here’s a guess as to how things will shape up in late July with the following 90 p...

Inter Milan raises hope and ambition in Champions League loss, but also must raise money

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:34:05 GMT

ISTANBUL (AP) — In the current renaissance for Italian club soccer, Inter Milan’s impressive performance in a losing cause at the Champions League final stood out.Inter gave Manchester City as many if not more problems than either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich did in the previous two rounds before falling to an unlucky 1-0 loss on Saturday in Istanbul.Fearless at times against the dominant club team in world soccer, creating chances to have at least taken the final into extra time, Inter deserved more than to join Roma and Fiorentina in completing a hat trick in 11 days of Italian losers in European finals. Pride and hunger were talked about in the early hours Sunday in the immediate aftermath of the missed opportunity against a Man City team pressured into playing below its best.“We have many regrets but we must be proud,” coach Simone Inzaghi said. “This final could be the fuel to try again next season.”Inzaghi’s team also looked capable of chasing down Napoli, the most compe...

Ferrari topples Toyota in return to 24 Hours of Le Mans after 50-year absence

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:34:05 GMT

LE MANS, France (AP) — Ferrari ended a 50-year absence from the 24 Hours of Le Mans by toppling mighty Toyota in the centenary running of the most iconic sports car race in the world. Ferrari last competed at Le Mans in 1973 but returned to Circuit de la Sarthe this year as part of a new hyperclass category that features hybrid technology. The hyperclass came from a rules convergence that both allowed competitors from the United States’ sports car series, IMSA, to compete at Le Mans, and also created an enticing platform automakers viewed as an opportunity to showcase their street car technology. Ferrari developed its program — a two-car effort that competes in the World Endurance Championship — over several years in a strategy similar to what was depicted in “Ford v Ferrari,” the film that focused on the boardroom pressures and drama surrounding Ford’s 1963 successful effort to end Ferrari’s reign at Le Mans. Only this time it was Ferrari trying to knock down a gi...

Elevated section of heavily traveled I-95 collapses in Philadelphia

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:34:05 GMT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — An elevated section of Interstate 95 collapsed early Sunday in Philadelphia after a vehicle caught fire, closing the main north-south highway on the East Coast and threatening to upend travel in parts of the densely populated Northeast, authorities said.Transportation officials warned of extensive delays and street closures and urged drivers to avoid the area. Early reports indicated that the vehicle may have been a tanker truck, but officials could not immediately confirm that. The fire was reported to be under control.Video from the scene showed a massive concrete slab had fallen from I-95 onto the road below in northeast Philadelphia. There were no immediate reports of injuries. The northbound lanes of I-95 were gone, and the southbound lanes were “compromised” due to heat from the fire, said Derek Bowmer, battalion chief of the Philadelphia Fire Department. Runoff from the fire or perhaps broken gas lines were causing explosions underground, he added.Mark Fuse...
